Optical glass is designed to many different specifications and indexes which are used by manufacturers in the design of optical components, mainly lenses. Optical glass is manufactured using two main methods or variations of those. The first is called single batch process (also called the day tank method). This uses a relatively small melting pot made from clay, fused silica, or platinum. The batch size can range from as little as 100 lbs. to over a thousand lbs. The second method is called the continuous tank method which has been used since the mid-nineteen fifties for large volume production of some optical glasses. As the name infers, it is in constant production. As the glass comes out, depending on the method, it can be floated to different thicknesses or produced in slabs and blocks. |
