Fused silica and fused quartz are used to manufacture products such as optical windows, precision optical flats, UV transmitting windows, and laser optics of all types.
Many people use the terms fused quartz and fused silica as one in the same, but there is a distinction. Fused quartz is a mineralogical product mined from the earth as natural quartz or from quartzite sand. It is then manufactured by fusing powdered crystal quartz in a hydrogen-oxygen flame and selected to different purity specifications set by the manufacturers. Fused silica is a synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide that is produced using either flame or vapor phase hydrolysis of silicon halide. The result is an amorphous optical material of extremely high purity, and is one of the most transparent optical materials made, which makes it the material chosen most for use in the far ultraviolet.
Listed below are some of the manufacturers whose material we supply, and links to information on that material.
